This Year 04:23
This year will be so different
This year will be my year
I know I’ve said it all before
 but now it’s happening

 This year flowers will grow
Because I’m planting rows
There’s so much left for me to see
My whole entire youth is
 out there burning brightly

Cause this year will be different
 This year will be different
This year, this year, this year
I assure you, but

If I miss out, how will I know?
And if I don’t live well who will tell me so?
 How’s twenty-something meant to go?
And in a year what will I have to show?

This year will be so different
I’ll change the small things first
 I’m never going back again
to all the years that hurt

Cause this year will be different
 This year will be different
This year, this year, this year
 I already know, but

If I miss out, how will I know? And iIf I don’t live well who will tell me so?
 How’s twenty-something meant to go?
And in a year what will I have to show?
Am I just watching all my time as it goes? But you never know Cause this year will be different
This year will be different This year, this year, this year Will be different

Blue Light 03:41
Trainwreck of a day, but
 you can’t look away
There’s no one beside you in the bed
So it’s you and your own head Too late for good rest, it’s twenty winks at best You’re waking up with tired eyes once again Close your eyes and just pretend It’s hard but I’ll still try to have an early night Stranded at the end of the day The voice in my head keeps talking away Thought you did it right, you turned out the blue light But really the screen glare is what you want Preferable to your own thoughts The morning could be bright But I don’t feel alright And it’s hard but I’ll still try to have an early night Stranded at the end of the day The voice in my head keeps talking away Turn out the blue Turn out the blue Turn out the blue light It’s hard but I’ll still try to have an early night Stranded at the end of the day The voice in my head keeps talking away It’s hard but I’ll still try to have an early night Just take me somewhere nice until I drift off Til I drift off...

Waiting for something but it don’t ever come When did I stop being able to have fun Now solitary is all I’ve become New life is looking more like an old one If all my leaves were falling… Dying to see the best in me Dying to change the person I have been If all my leaves were falling Deciduous not evergreen If all my leaves were falling Tomorrow could be new again What if I made it out What if I beat the fear What if I tried hard but I just kept waiting here What if I made it out What if I beat the fear What if I tried hard but I just kept waiting here Dying to see the best in me Dying to change the person I have been Deciduous not evergreen Waiting for something but it don’t ever come Waiting for something, waiting for something

Two Boats 04:53
Across great walls of water
through mists and sheets of rain
 You spy another sailor
 and they begin to wave
Silhouette beckons “please”
 Looks like a mayday call
 The water’s to their knees
 One boat about to fall

 A pang of recognition
 develops in your chest
 Out there’s a tough position
and you would know it best
You step down from the mast
it’s flooded where you land
 Two boats sinking as fast
as one can bail by hand
 You’re just human

And it’s good to give back
but you can’t give what you don’t have
There's no need to feel bad
 help yourself first, not last

It’s good to give back
but you can’t give what you don’t have
There's no need to feel bad
just help yourself first, not last
5.
It’s been three days now indoors
Hoping quiet will quiet the war
Worried you’ll never feel good like before
 but you will

You know alone time ain’t good
 Things get hazy and misunderstood
Can’t see a way out, you wish that you could
 but you will, you will

 No-one is an island
Though you might act like it
 It’s your silver bullet
And it might be this simple:
 Heaven is other people

 It’s quite a negative take
Being so hard on every mistake
Can’t realise there’s times everyone breaks
but you will

 And what if everything’s fine?
 Only complicated in your mind
A clear perspective’s just so hard to find
 but you will, you will

 No-one is an island
Though you might act like it
 It’s your silver bullet
 That you need a little:
 Heaven is other people

So there’s no reason to wait
Out the front door, through the front gate
Might even find it lifts some of the weight
 Yeah, you will

So when you’re out of the light
When you wanna close in and hold tight
You could just ask what they’re doing tonight
 Yeah you will, you will
6.
Just need to take things lighter

 When weight begins to stack
 when everything attacks
 Imagine steel as feathers
and it won’t break your back

Just need to take things lighter
Think I can take things lighter

about

“A Kilo of Feathers” is the debut pop release by Melbourne artist James Gales, six shimmering songs that stake a claim for Lighthouser in the achingly bittersweet synthpop lineage of The Postal Service, Passion Pit and Baths.

Of the EP’s themes, James says: “While writing these songs I found myself obsessed with the collision of emotional lightness and heaviness. To be an optimist, you need to affront positivity against so much darkness. These songs are a slice-of-life, or a journey through that world.”

Truly “slice-of-life”, the six songs on A Kilo Of Feathers are intensely relatable: concerning smartphone anxiety (“Blue Light”), new years resolutions (“This Year”), and emerging from isolation to connect with others (“Heaven Is Other People”). Delivered through accomplished, fun synthpop production, using the sounds of blippy chiptune, raucous 2000s indietronica, and gleaming Nintendo soundtracks, these themes land to create an engaging, emotive listen.

about

Lighthouser Melbourne, Australia

Lighthouser is iridescent lap-pop with crystal clear melodies and slice-of-life lyrics. Sole member James Gales draws on a virtuosic background in classical piano, as well as the rich history of emo synthpop artists like The Postal Service, Björk and Passion Pit, to make songs for imaginary Nintendo games, retrofuturist daydreams, and bike riding around your Midwest US small town circa 2004. ... more
